Historie
Deutsch: Mit Urkunde vom 19. August 1976 der Bezirksregierung Köln wurde der Stadt Schleiden das Recht verliehen, das von Walther Bergmann entworfene Stadtwappen zu führen.
Die Grundfarbe grün ist dem Wappen der ehemaligen Stadt Gemünd entnommen. Der dargestellte Löwe entstammt dem ehemaligen Wappen der Stadt Schleiden, ist jedoch in der Grafik flüssiger dargestellt.
Er war bereits Wappentier der Herrschaft (seit 1602 Grafschaft) Schleiden. Die neun Lilien im grünen Feld vertreten im Stadtwappen die Städte Gemünd und Schleiden, das Amt Harperscheid sowie die Gemeinden Broich, Bronsfeld, Dreiborn, Harperscheid, Oberhausen und Schöneseiffen, die am 1. Januar 1972 zur Stadt Schleiden zusammengefügt wurden.[1]
English: Schleiden was sometimes mentioned as a city in the 13th century, but there is no historical proof for city rights. The oldest known seal dates from the 14th century and shows a baldaquin under which two persons hold a shield with the lion of the Counts of Schleiden. The latter seals also show the same composition. The arms of the city, however, were identical to the arms of the counts, so without the supporters from the seal. In 1976 the arms were confirmed, but now in green, taken from the arms of Gemünd.
