ON May 12, 1840, Louis Philippe being king of theFrench people, the Chamber of Deputies was busywith a discussion on sugar tariffs. It had beendragging somewhat, and the members were showing signsof restlessness. Suddenly the Count de Remusat, then Min-ister of the Interior, appeared, and asked a hearing for acommunication from the government. Gentlemen, he said, the king has ordered his RoyalHighness Monseigneur the Prince de Joinville* to go withhis frigate to the island of St. Helena, there to collect theremains of the Emperor Napoleon. A tremor ran over the House. The announcement wasutterly unexpected. Napoleon to come back! The bodyseemed electrified, and the voice of the minister was drownedfor a moment in applause.
