Ani další Grand Prix se britskému týmu příliš nepovedla a nejlepší z dua McLarenu, Heikki Kovalainen, se musel sklonit nejen před oběma jezdci Ferrari, ale též před vozy stáje BMW Sauber, který v Bahrajnu potvrdil svou vzestupnou tendenci a dostal se do průběžného vedení v poháru konstruktérů. Na pouštní závodní víkend bude chtít zapomenout zejména Lewis Hamilton, který nejprve zaspal start a z třetího místa se propadl až na desátou pozici, kterou musel přepustit kvůli neplánované zastávce v boxech po zaviněné kolizi s Fernandem Alonsem. Celkově dokončil závod na slabém třináctém místě a nepřipsal si tak ani jeden bod. Kovalainen měl naopak start velmi podařený a rychle vybojoval třetí příčku, jenže byl téměř okamžitě předjet Räikkönenem a kvůli probrzdění pneumatiky a jím způsobeným vibracím se rozhodl raději příliš netlačit na pilu. Chování auta se srovnalo po první zastávce v boxech, ale to již bylo pozdě. Fin si tak připsal pátou příčku a nejrychlejší kolo. Po dlouhých devatenácti závodech se tak musely poprvé stupně vítězů obejít bez zástupce Stříbrných šípů. Tým se svými 28 body – oba jezdci přispěli rovným dílem – propadl na průběžné třetí místo v poháru konstruktérů.
