Thus this holy man, faithful to the end,passed through death into life whilst engaged inministering to CHRIST in his poorer members. Nodeath can be imagined more worthy of a Christian ora better couclusion to a holy life. 294 The Revival, S. Oswald died February 29th, A.D. 992, in the30th year of his Episcopate. His body was laid inthe Cathedral of Worcester, on the south side ofthe Altar; but it does not rest there now. It wastranslated by his successor, Bishop Aldulf, who, be-coming Archbishop of York, took up the body,enshrined, and translated it into York Cathedral.

Comely of countenance, and cheerful indisposition, he was much beloved by all who knewhim, with the exception of his stepmother. QueenElfrida, who had a son of her own, for whom she wasanxious to secure the throne. It is said that Edwardsuffered not a little from her violence, even in hisfathers lifetime. When King Edward died, some-what unexpectedly, A.D. 975, she did her utmost toobtain the election for her son, Ethelred, a child ofseven years, but her intrigues were baffled by S.Dunstan.
