De Wilhelminakade kreeg zijn naam rond 1900 en is vernoemd naar Koningin Wilhelmina. De Wilhelminakade was de vestigingsplaats van de Holland-Amerika Lijn in de periode 1901-1971. Met name in de periode tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog vertrokken grote aantallen Oost-Europese volksverhuizers via de Wilhelminakade naar New York. De Nieuw Amsterdam vertrok in 1971 als laatste schip van de lijndienst op New York. Op de westelijke punt van de Wilhelminakade, het Koninginnehoofd, staat sinds 2001 het gietijzeren kunstwerk ‘Lost Luggage Depot’ van de Canadese beeldend kunstenaar en historicus Jeff Wall (1946-). Het is het symbool van het afscheid dat de vele emigranten namen van hun vorig leven. The Wilhelminakade, situated in Rotterdam along the river Maas, is named after the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina. The Holland-America shipping line had here her terminal from 1901 until 1971. In that period big numbers of emigrants from all over Europe left the continent for the USA, especially during the years before WO I. The SS (steamship) New Amsterdam was the last departing ship in 1971. On the west point of the Wilhelminakade, the Koninginnehoofd, stands since 2001 the ‘Lost Luggage Depot’ made by the Canadian plastic artist Jeff Wall (1946-). It is made of cast iron and symbolizes the goodbye of the many emigrants to their former lives. |
