A lot of New Zealand plants from many different families naturally have oddly coloured and textured foliage - strange gnarled and twisted, stunted or tatty looking, brown, orange, pink or yellow tinted leaves on tangled or dead-looking, black or brown stems, especially when young. My theory is that this has something to do with the fact that, until recently, the only large herbivores were birds (Moas etc) which, unlike a lot of mammals, forage by sight. Basically, New Zealand plants are trying to look sick or dead to avoid being eaten. Interestingly, the only other place where this would be true is Madagascar, where the big herbivores were the Elephant birds, very similar to the Moas and also recently extinct. I note that quite a few of the endemic Euphorbias, Ceropegias and Aloes are also strange twisted brown things. I can't think of anything similar from anywhere else. Has anyone done any research on this? I'm out of the academic loop these days... |
