We, Alexander I
By the Grace of God and the Will of the Nation
Prince of Bulgaria

The government of our neighbouring Serbian people, led by personal and selfish purposes, willing to nullify the sacred cause – the Unification of Bulgarian people as a whole – today without any legitimate and just reason declared war to our Country and ordered his troops to invade our land. With great sorrow We understood this sad information, as We could never believe, that our blood and faith brothers would have taken the arms and begun a fratricidal war in the difficult times, the little countries of the Balkan Peninsula are undergoing and that they would act so inhumanly and impiously towards their own neighbours, which, without damaging anyone, are working and fighting for a right, noble and praiseworthy cause.

As we leave to the Serbs and their government all responsibility of this fratricidal war between two brotherly peoples and of the horrible results, that could affect both countries, We communicate to our beloved people, that We have accepted the war, declared by the Serbs and We gave our valiant and heroic troops the order to begin our operations against the Serbs and to boldly defend Bulgarian people’s land, honour and freedom.

Our cause is sacred and We hope, that God will take it under its protection and will grant us the necessary strength to win out, and to defeat our enemies.

As We are sure, that our beloved people will hasten to help us for the difficult, for the holy cause – the defence of our land against the enemy’s invasion – and that every Bulgarian, able to take arms, will come under our flag to fight for his own fatherland and freedom, We appeal the Highest, so that he may protect and watch over Bulgaria and that he may help us in these difficult and hard times, which our country is undergoing.

May the Highest Lord God help us.
Plovdiv, 2nd November 1885.

Noi Alessandro I

Possa Nostro Signore Dio Altissimo aiutarci.
Plovdiv, li 2 novembre 1885.
