Johnny did, andthis what she set out to do. But Johnny hadno notion of missing any fun. He wanted tosee what was going to happen. So he did notrest contented where he was hidden in the thickbranches of the pine, but combined safety withview by climbing to the topmost branch thatwould bear him, and there, sharp against thesky, he squirmed about and squealed aloud inhis excitement. The branch was so small thatit bent under his weight, swaying this way andthat as he shifted about, and every moment Iexpected to see it snap off. If it had beenbroken when swaying my way, Johnny wouldcertainly have fallen on me, and this wouldprobably have resulted in bad feelings betweenmyself and his mother; but the limb wastougher than it looked, or perhaps Johnny hadhad plenty of experience, for he neither lost hishold nor broke the branch. Meanwhile, Grumpy stalked out to meet theGrizzly. She stood as high as she could andset all her bristles on end ; then, growling andchopping her teeth, she faced him.

He came striding toward thefeast as though alone. But when Grumpy gotwithin twelve feet of him she uttered a succes-sion of short, coughy roars, and, charging, gavehim a tremendous blow on the ear. TheGrizzly was surprised; but he replied with aleft-hander that knocked her over like a sack ofhay. Nothing daunted, but doubly furious, shejumped up and rushed at him. Then they clinched and rolled over and over,whacking and pounding, snorting and growling,and making no end of dust and rumpus. Butabove all their noise I could clearly hear LittleJohnny, yelling at the top of his voice, and ev-idently encouraging his mother to go right inand finish the Grizzly at once.
