Deutsch: „Das Wappen der Stadt Neuss zeigt auf einem von Schwarz und Rot gespaltenen Schild im schwarzen (linken) Feld einen rot bewehrten, goldenen Doppeladler, im roten (rechten) Feld ein durchgehendes silbernes Kreuz. Das Wappen wird von einer goldenen deutschen Kaiserkrone gekrönt. Als Wappenhalter dienen zwei goldene Löwen.“
English: „The arms of Neuss show the Imperial eagle, granted to the city in 1475 by Emperor Friedrich III. The left half shows a silver cross in red, the origin thereof is not quite clear. It may be a symbol of the crusades in general; it may be derived from the cross of the State of Köln, to which the city belonged; or it may be the symbol of St. Quirinus or Rome. The latter appears on the oldest knowsn seal of the city of Neuss, known from 1245, but proabably a few decades older. This very large seal (9,5 cm diameter) shows a city gate or castle, with St. Quirinus standing on a dragon and dressed as a knight. He holds a shield with a lion.“

Deutsch: „Nach 1550 wurden das alte und das neue Wappen in einem Schild vereinigt. Seitdem lautet die heraldische Beschreibung des Stadtwappens: Der Schild von Schwarz und Rot gespalten, vorne (oder rechts) ein doppelköpfiger Adler, hinten (oder links) ein durchgehendes silbernes Kreuz. Der Schild ist bedeckt von der goldenen Kaiserkrone. Als Schildhalter zwei goldene Löwen. Die Löwen als Schildhalter sind eine Zutat, die nicht zum eigentlichen Wappen gehören, sich aber eingebürgert haben und um 1637/38 zum ersten Mal erschienen sind.“
